Mascherano Adjusts Game Plan Following Ustari’s Red Card
Inter Miami CF’s head coach, Javier Mascherano, was faced with an unexpected challenge during the team’s recent match against Charlotte FC at Chase Stadium. A red card issued to goalkeeper Oscar Ustari in the first half required a swift change to the team’s strategy, affecting the potential participation of star player Lionel Messi.
Impact of Ustari’s Red Card
Ustari’s early dismissal occurred in the 35th minute as he fouled Wilfried Zaha during a one-on-one situation that would have given Zaha a clear shot on goal. This forced Mascherano to reconsider his game plan, particularly regarding Messi’s return to the field.
Mascherano’s Decision on Messi
In the aftermath of the match, Mascherano explained, “The reality is that in the case of Leo maybe we had thought about giving him minutes in the game. But since the game was played with one man less, and taking into consideration the time he has without playing, we thought that the best thing was to preserve it. We didn’t want to risk it.”
Messi was included in the matchday squad for the first time since February 25, following absences in earlier games against Houston Dynamo FC and Cavalier FC due to load management. Mascherano emphasized that Messi had not sustained any injury but required rest to prevent future complications.
Match Outcome and Team Spirit
Despite facing adversity on the pitch, Inter Miami secured a 1-0 victory against Charlotte FC, with new signing Tadeo Allende scoring the game’s only goal shortly after halftime. The team showcased strong defensive play to maintain their lead and avoid conceding an equalizer.
Mascherano commended his players for their resilience, stating, “I want to keep the resilience. Try to go forward. I think today we showed a lot of team spirit.” He also acknowledged the need for continuous hard work and focus, suggesting that the team must avoid complacency.
Looking Ahead
As Inter Miami continues their unbeaten streak this season, they are preparing for their upcoming match in Jamaica for the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup round-of-16 against Cavalier FC. Miami leads the aggregate score 2-0 after their initial victory on March 6 at Chase Stadium.
Mascherano commented on the challenges ahead, stating, “It’s a long season for us. We have a tough game Thursday. Will be difficult, difficult in Jamaica. So we have to be ready.” He expressed awareness of the fatigue within the squad, citing limited resources and ongoing injuries. However, he remains focused on achieving results rather than making excuses, affirming, “In football, we have two ways: excuses or results. And we have to choose results.”
