The deal would be a blow to San Diego head coach Jonas Eidevall, who was named to the post earlier this week. But Shaw, 20, has long asked to be traded, and a source told ESPN the request dates back a year.

The move should do enough to shore up North Carolina’s offense, which has scored 34 times in 26 games and needs more production compared to the league’s top teams. With Brazilian attacker Kerorin returning from injury and the addition of Shaw, North Carolina State will have an even more potent offense in 2025.

Shaw joined the Wave in 2022 and has played in 61 league and cup games, scoring 14 goals. She was part of the San Diego team that won the NWSL Shield in 2023 and the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2024. Shaw was also named to the NWSL Best Eleven in 2023.

Shaw, a native of Frisco, Texas, has made considerable progress at the international level since making his debut in October 2023, scoring eight goals in 21 games. Shaw was part of the team that won gold at the 2024 Olympics. She was named the 2022 U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year.
