There are so many great Vietnam War movies that it’s hard to invite another one into your home. But what about Vietnam War movies where coconut leaves are the deadly weapon, big bad dresses like Dr. Evil or titters like Homer Simpson, and just about every fight scene deserves a spot in the all-time canon of kung fu movies?

If you haven’t seen it yet, bow down at the altar of martial arts legend Sammo Hung. Higashi CondorsIf so, the Criterion Collection’s December release of this previously regionally exclusive and unrestricted classic is the perfect excuse to catch up. Given the incendiary premise that the U.S. government would round up small numbers of immigrants and deport them to their countries of origin, their arrival feels disturbingly relevant. “Who would have thought that after all the trouble we had to escape, we would end up back here?” Hoon’s co-protagonist Min-sun opines early on, making the point obvious.

Fortunately, the script, written by Hung’s co-creator Barry Wong, isn’t quite as serious as its lines suggest. There’s even gallows humor before that. “What if the parachute doesn’t open?” asks Chin (Charlie Chin). “Then you will be the first to land,” Lt. Col. Lam Zheng-Ying (Lam Zheng-Ying) bluntly replies. This garbage memorable but short interaction Higashi CondorsAnd it offsets the nihilism embedded in its dual identity as a Vietnam War movie and a “men on a mission” movie in which a band of doomed heroes ventures into enemy territory on a dangerous, high-risk operation. There is. (think Save Private Ryan, gun of navarone, seven samurai,or lord of the rings Trilogy. )
