Sharon Lokedi Sets New Boston Marathon Record
In a stunning display of endurance and speed, Sharon Lokedi, 31, shattered the Boston Marathon course record on Monday. Her victory coincided with the city’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution.
Race Highlights
Lokedi, representing Kenya, outpaced two-time defending champion Hellen Obiri in the final mile of the race. This victory comes just a year after Lokedi finished behind Obiri in one of the most competitive finishes in the event’s history.
In this year’s race, Lokedi completed the 129th Boston Marathon in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 17 minutes, 22 seconds. This remarkable performance placed her 19 seconds ahead of Obiri and surpassed the previous Boston record, set by Buzunesh Deba in 2014, by over 2½ minutes.
American Finishers
Among the American competitors, Jess McClain led the women, securing seventh place with a personal best of 2 hours, 22 minutes, 43 seconds, improving her previous record by three minutes. Close behind was Annie Frisbie, finishing eighth in 2 hours, 23 minutes, 21 seconds.
