Inside the Met Gala: Anna Wintour’s Culinary Choices for 2024

The annual Met Gala, a hallmark of fashion and culture, is meticulously curated by Anna Wintour, notable for her role as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue. Among her various duties, Wintour is charged with determining the event’s theme, guest list, and crucially, the menu.

An Exclusive Menu: What’s Off the Table

As the Met Gala approaches, Wintour has clarified some of her personal dining preferences, banning certain ingredients from the menu for the 2024 event. In a recent interview with TODAY’s Jenna Bush Hager, Wintour disclosed that garlic, onions, and chives will not be served, citing her aversion to these items:

“Well, those are three things I’m not particularly fond of,” Wintour stated, as reported by E Online.

This thoughtful decision ensures that attendees can enjoy the event without the concern of offensive breath. Interestingly, more dishes have also been strategically excluded: bruschetta and parsley. According to the Daily Mail, this is primarily due to concerns about messiness and the risk of parsley getting stuck in teeth.

Chef Kwame Onwuachi: A Culinary Vision

Chef Kwame Onwuachi will take the helm of food preparation for this year’s gala. With an expertise in Afro-Caribbean cuisine and ownership of the restaurant Tatiana in Lincoln Center, Onwuachi plans to align the menu with the theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” He aims to reflect the richness of Black culture across various influences:

“‘I wanted to really capture Black culture in all of its elements – from the diaspora to the Caribbean to the American South, even to just the boroughs in New York,” Onwuachi explained in a statement to BET.

A Designated Dining Experience

Designed to cater to high-profile guests in both taste and aesthetic, the menu for the Met Gala plays a pivotal role in the overall experience. The absence of certain ingredients speaks both to Wintour’s preferences and the desire to maintain the elegance and sophistication the event embodies. The commitment to honoring Black culture highlights the gala’s evolving narrative that intertwines fashion, food, and identity.

As the event draws near, anticipation builds around not just the fashion statements but also the thoughtfully crafted culinary offerings that celebrate diversity and culture through cuisine.
