The Resurrection of the Christ: Mel Gibson’s Anticipated Sequel with Lionsgate

Mel Gibson and his producing partner Bruce Davey have officially selected Lionsgate as the studio for their long-anticipated sequel to the 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ. This follow-up, titled The Resurrection of the Christ, aims to explore the events post-crucifixion.

A Legacy Revisited

The Passion of the Christ holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing R-rated film in the U.S. until it was surpassed by Deadpool & Wolverine last year. The original film received mixed reviews, drawing significant praise while also facing accusations of antisemitism, which Gibson has consistently denied.

Collaboration with Lionsgate

Gibson’s decision to partner with Lionsgate for this project is rooted in a longstanding relationship, with the studio previously producing his films Hacksaw Ridge and Flight Risk. Gibson expressed confidence in Lionsgate’s capabilities, stating, “Lionsgate’s brave, innovative spirit and nimble, can-do attitude have inspired me for a long time…I’m confident they will bring everything they can to the release of this movie.”

What to Expect

While The Passion of the Christ focused on the final hours of Jesus’ life, The Resurrection of the Christ is set to delve into the days between his death and resurrection. Most of the original cast is expected to reprise their roles, including Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus in the original film.

Anticipation Building

Adam Fogelson, Chair of Lionsgate, shared his thoughts on the project, describing it as “the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation.” He commended Gibson as one of the greatest directors of contemporary cinema and emphasized the film’s potential to captivate audiences worldwide. Fogelson remarked, “This project is both deeply personal to him and the perfect showcase for his talents as a filmmaker.”
