BOULDER, CO — June 14, 2025 — The IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder triathlon unfolded today under clear skies and challenging conditions, as athletes from around the globe converged on Colorado’s endurance capital to tackle a demanding course set at over 5,300 feet above sea level. The event featured a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run, all against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.
Race Highlights and Results
In the men’s professional division, American triathlete Sam Long clinched victory with a time of 3:33:22. Long, a Boulder native, leveraged his familiarity with the terrain and altitude to outpace a competitive field. Close on his heels was Canadian Matthew Sharpe, who secured second place, followed by American Ben Hoffman in third.
The women’s professional race saw American Ellie Salthouse dominate the course, finishing first with a time of 4:03:57. Salthouse’s performance was marked by a strong bike leg and a consistent run. Trailing her were Jeanni Metzler of South Africa in second place and American Lesley Smith in third.
Course Overview
The triathlon commenced with a single-loop swim in the Boulder Reservoir, known for its clear waters and scenic surroundings. Athletes then transitioned to a two-loop bike course that traversed rolling hills and offered panoramic views of the Flatirons. The final leg consisted of a two-loop run around the reservoir, combining paved paths and dirt trails, challenging participants with its undulating terrain.
Altitude Acclimatization
Competing at high altitude presented unique challenges, including reduced oxygen levels that can impair performance and recovery. Race organizers provided resources to help athletes acclimate, such as pre-race briefings and hydration stations. Many participants arrived in Boulder days in advance to adapt to the conditions, a strategy that proved beneficial for those who managed to maintain their pace throughout the race.
Community Impact and Logistics
The event prompted several road closures and travel adjustments in Boulder County, particularly affecting areas north of Boulder, south of Lyons, and west of Longmont. Residents and visitors were advised to plan accordingly, with shuttle services provided to transport athletes and spectators to the Boulder Reservoir on race day. The reservoir itself was closed to the public starting at 11 a.m. on June 12 through the conclusion of the event on June 14.
Path to the World Championship
IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder served as a qualifying event for the 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, set to take place in Marbella, Spain. Top finishers in each age group earned slots to compete on the world stage, adding an extra layer of competition and prestige to the Boulder race.
