Lauren Betts Dominates in NCAA Tournament, Leads UCLA to Elite Eight
Following a challenging loss in their final home game against USC, Lauren Betts has adopted a more aggressive approach in the NCAA tournament. Her determination has become a driving force for her team, the UCLA Bruins.
Outstanding Performance Against Ole Miss
In a pivotal Sweet 16 matchup against Ole Miss, Betts showcased her skills by scoring 31 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, achieving a remarkable 15-of-16 shooting accuracy. This performance marked her as the first Division I player in two decades to record back-to-back games with at least 30 points, 10 rebounds, and an 80% shooting percentage during either the regular season or postseason.
Historical Achievements
Her shooting efficiency of 93.8% ties the record for the highest field goal percentage in a single NCAA tournament game with a minimum of 15 attempts. Notably, she is one of only three players in the last 25 years to have multiple 30-point, 10-rebound games in the same NCAA tournament, alongside legends Brittney Griner (2013) and Elena Delle Donne (2012).
Coach’s Praise
UCLA head coach Cori Close expressed her admiration for Betts, stating, “We have a generational player on our team. She’s not only dominant for herself, but she makes everybody on the floor better.” Close emphasized Betts’ ability to improve the overall performance of the team, highlighting her significance in the Bruins’ journey to the Elite Eight.
Game Dynamics
The Rebels attempted to employ double-teaming strategies against Betts but mainly relied on one-on-one defense, which proved largely ineffective. Despite a resilient first half where Ole Miss trailed by just one point, the Bruins regrouped in the third quarter, initiating an 8-0 run that gave them a significant advantage.
Kiki Rice was instrumental during this stretch, contributing to all eight points through either scoring or assists. Betts’ overall influence on the game was evident, as the Bruins saw a 35% improvement in scoring whenever she was on the court.
Defensive Impact
In addition to her offensive contributions, Betts played a critical role in defense, contesting shots and limiting Ole Miss to a mere 2-of-16 shooting percentage on attempts she defended. Her commitment to both ends of the court highlights her all-around game and dedication to team success.
Looking Ahead
With this victory, UCLA advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2018. They are set to face LSU, a team that eliminated them in last year’s Sweet 16 in a closely contested match. The loss remains fresh in the minds of the Bruins, who are intent on capturing a national title this year.
As coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin of Ole Miss noted, the real challenge for upcoming opponents will be stopping Betts. “They’re going to have their work cut out for them,” she said, emphasizing Betts’ significant impact on the Bruins’ chances for a championship run.
