Messi’s Impact on MLS Growth Acknowledged by Inter Miami Coach
Javier Mascherano, the coach of Inter Miami, attributed significant growth in Major League Soccer (MLS) to the presence of superstar Lionel Messi, who has been with the club since 2023. After a recent match that ended in a 0-0 draw against the Chicago Fire, Mascherano emphasized Messi’s role in enhancing the league’s global standing.
Messi’s Influence and Record Attendance
As Messi approaches his two-year anniversary with the team, Mascherano noted, “He’s changing how the world sees MLS in one way or another.” His influence was palpable during a match held at Soldier Field, which drew an all-time record of 62,358 fans to see the Fire, marking Messi’s inaugural appearance at the famed venue.
Record-Breaking Attendance Across MLS
This isn’t the first record-setting event for MLS featuring Inter Miami; previous matches against the New England Revolution and Sporting Kansas City in 2024 also saw attendance figures soar. In those instances, the games were held at Gillette Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium, respectively. Additionally, several MLS clubs have relocated matches against Inter Miami to larger venues to accommodate ticket demand, exemplified by the Columbus Crew’s decision to host their upcoming game in Cleveland.
The League’s Responsibility
Despite the progress already made, Mascherano urged MLS to build upon Messi’s impact. He stated, “Now, MLS has the responsibility to continue advancing… He’s a unique, unrepeatable player. Everywhere he’s been, he’s marked a before and after.”
Match Analysis and Team Performance
The draw against the Chicago Fire saw Inter Miami slip to third place in the Eastern Conference, though they are just one point behind leaders Charlotte FC, having played one game fewer. Mascherano highlighted his team’s challenge in generating scoring opportunities, managing only ten shots with three on target compared to the Fire’s 16 shots and seven on goal.
Managing a Busy Schedule
Mentioning the demanding schedule of recent weeks, he explained, “We’ve been playing every three or four days for almost two months…” This rigorous routine, along with their participation in the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup, has contributed to a heavier workload for the players. Despite challenges, Mascherano commended his team for their resilience in securing a clean sheet.
Upcoming Matches
Looking ahead, Inter Miami is set to face the Columbus Crew on Saturday evening and will begin their two-legged semifinal against the Vancouver Whitecaps in the Champions Cup on April 24.
