Seattle, WA – May 27, 2025 – The Seattle Mariners opened a nine-game homestand with a commanding 9–1 win over the Washington Nationals at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday night. Rookie right-hander Logan Evans delivered a standout performance, pitching eight innings and allowing just one run on four hits. His efficiency and command were key factors in the Mariners’ victory.
Pitching Mastery
Evans (3–1) showcased exceptional control, throwing 88 pitches—nearly 66% for strikes—and inducing weak contact throughout the game. He became the first Mariners starter in over two decades to face an entirely left-handed lineup, a testament to his adaptability and poise. Despite lacking high strikeout numbers, Evans effectively utilized his breaking pitches, often referred to as his “three-headed monster,” to keep Nationals hitters off balance. His performance marked the longest outing by a Mariners starter this season and solidified his place in the rotation.
Offensive Surge
The Mariners’ offense provided early support, jumping to a 3–0 lead in the first inning. Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh each hit home runs, with Raleigh adding another solo shot later in the game to bring his season total to 19, leading the American League. Rodríguez’s two-run homer, followed by Raleigh’s back-to-back blast, set the tone for the evening. The Mariners added runs in the sixth and eighth innings, capitalizing on defensive lapses by the Nationals.
Nationals’ Struggles
The Nationals’ offense was stifled by Evans’ pitching and their own lack of discipline at the plate. They chased 37% of pitches outside the strike zone and swung at just 60% of pitches inside, well below MLB averages. This led to quick outs and minimal offensive pressure. Manager Dave Martinez acknowledged the team’s struggles with pitch selection, a recurring issue for the young lineup. James Wood provided the Nationals’ only highlight with a 448-foot solo home run in the fourth inning.
Looking Ahead
With the win, the Mariners improved to 30–23 on the season, maintaining their position at the top of the American League West standings. Evans’ performance has bolstered his case for a continued role in the rotation, especially with returning starters Bryce Miller and Logan Gilbert. The Mariners will look to extend their momentum in the upcoming games against the Nationals.
