San Diego’s Over-the-Line Tournament Returns for 72nd Year, Celebrating Beach Sports and Brotherhood

by Men's Reporter Contributor

San Diego’s iconic Over-the-Line (OTL) tournament is back for its 72nd year, drawing thousands of players and spectators to Fiesta Island for two weekends of sand, sun, and spirited competition. Hosted by the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC), the 2025 World Championship Over-the-Line Tournament kicks off on July 12–13 and continues July 19–20, continuing a tradition that began in the 1950s.

OTL is a uniquely San Diegan sport—a fast-paced, three-on-three bat-and-ball game played on the beach. Unlike traditional softball, there are no bases or gloves (except in certain age divisions), and the objective is to hit a rubber softball over a line 55 feet away without the opposing team catching it. The simplicity of the game, combined with its festive atmosphere, has made it a staple of Southern California beach culture.

This year’s tournament features over 1,200 teams competing across 10 divisions, including Men’s Open, Women’s Open, and age-based categories such as Century (30+), Canardly (40+), Cannever (50+), Cadaver (60+), and Camummy (70+). Games begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue until dusk, with a double-elimination format ensuring teams get ample playtime.

While the competition is fierce, OTL is equally renowned for its lively, adults-only environment. Spectators and players alike embrace the event’s playful spirit, often donning humorous costumes and setting up themed tents along the beach. Team names frequently feature puns and innuendos, contributing to the tournament’s irreverent charm.

The event is open to the public, with no ticket required to watch the games. However, attendees are advised to adhere to OMBAC’s “No B’s” policy: no bottles, bicycles, bowzers (dogs), babies, bad attitudes, or battles (fighting). Glass containers, kegs, and styrofoam coolers are also prohibited, and while the event is held in a public space, it is recommended for those 18 and older due to its rowdy nature.

In addition to the main tournament, this year’s festivities include the inaugural OTL Cornhole Tournament, offering a new way for attendees to engage in friendly competition. Scheduled for July 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the cornhole event features cash prizes for top teams and adds another layer of entertainment to the weekend.

For those planning to attend, parking on Fiesta Island is limited and fills up quickly. OMBAC encourages the use of rideshare services, with designated drop-off and pick-up zones near the playing area. VIP parking passes are available for purchase, offering closer access to the tournament grounds.

As OTL celebrates its 72nd year, it continues to embody the spirit of San Diego’s beach culture—combining athleticism, camaraderie, and a healthy dose of humor. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a first-time spectator, the tournament offers a unique glimpse into a beloved local tradition that shows no signs of slowing down.
