Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, tragically passed away during a family vacation in Costa Rica. Following his death, Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) has launched an inquiry, currently focusing on the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Initial Investigation Findings

Randall Zuniga, the director of the OIJ, addressed the media on Monday, confirming that evidence strongly indicates Miller’s death was accidental. “This investigation has been closely coordinated with the FBI in the United States,” Zuniga informed reporters.

Investigators conducted tests in the family’s hotel room, leading to the discovery of dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide. Zuniga mentioned that readings reached as high as 600 parts per million, which is alarmingly above the acceptable level of zero for such environments.

Details on the Investigation

According to Zuniga, the room connected to a machinery area was likely the source of the contamination. Although initial medical examinations ruled out asphyxiation, traces of vomit were found, suggesting that further toxicological analyses are necessary to confirm the precise cause of death.

Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia, an OIJ spokesperson, noted that there is currently no additional information on other individuals present in the hotel room or any possible effects of the contamination on adjacent accommodations.

Family’s Experience and Health Concerns

The Gardner family reported that several members experienced illness following a meal consumed at a local restaurant during their stay, leading to inquiries about potential foodborne illnesses. The investigation has included a request for analysis from the Costa Rican Institute for Research and Teaching in Nutrition and Health (INCIENSA).

Shortly before Miller’s passing, the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica confirmed the death of an American citizen but provided limited details regarding the circumstances. “Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones during this difficult time, we have no further comment at this time,” stated a spokesperson from the State Department.

A talented athlete, Miller Gardner participated in high school football in South Carolina, wearing the same number (11) his father donned during his 14-season MLB career with the Yankees. Brett Gardner, a key player on the team’s 2009 championship roster, officially retired in 2021.
