The 2025 U.S. Marine Corps Junior and 16U National Championships commenced on July 10 at the FargoDome, marking the start of one of the most prestigious youth wrestling tournaments in the United States. Running through July 19, the event brings together thousands of high school wrestlers from across the country to compete in freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines.

Known colloquially as “Fargo,” the tournament has become a rite of passage for young wrestlers aiming to make their mark on the national stage. The competition features two primary age divisions: 16U, for athletes aged 15 and 16, and Junior, encompassing high school wrestlers in grades 9 through 12. Both divisions include events in men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s freestyle wrestling.

The FargoDome, located on the campus of North Dakota State University, transforms into a wrestling hub during the championships, with multiple mats covering the arena floor. The venue’s scale and atmosphere provide a unique and memorable experience for participants and spectators alike.

Among the numerous state teams, Connecticut has sent its largest contingent ever, with over 100 wrestlers participating in this year’s championships. This significant increase from previous years highlights the state’s growing investment in youth wrestling development. The team includes a mix of seasoned competitors and newcomers, many of whom have achieved notable success at the state and national levels.

Noteworthy athletes from Connecticut include:

  • Jackson Heslin and Chase Kastner of Greens Farms Academy, both returning All-Americans in Greco-Roman wrestling.
  • Kayla Batres (110 lbs), Calli Gilchrist (120 lbs), and Sarah Henckel (155 lbs), all of whom secured podium finishes in last year’s tournament and are competing in the Junior girls’ division this year.

The state’s representation also features several CIAC State Open champions and prep school national champions, reflecting the depth of talent within Connecticut’s wrestling programs.

The championships are meticulously organized, with events scheduled to ensure a smooth progression through various weight classes and styles. Key dates include:

  • July 12-13: Girls’ freestyle competitions, encompassing both Junior and 16U divisions.
  • July 14-16: Boys’ freestyle matches for Junior and 16U divisions.
  • July 18-19: Boys’ Greco-Roman events for both age groups.

Each day features multiple sessions, including preliminary rounds, quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship matches. The tournament also includes ceremonies to honor All-Americans and national champions, adding to the event’s prestige.

Success at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals often serves as a springboard for young wrestlers aspiring to compete at collegiate and international levels. The tournament’s competitive environment and exposure attract college recruiters and national team scouts, providing athletes with opportunities to advance their wrestling careers.

The event’s significance extends beyond individual achievements, fostering a sense of community and sportsmanship among participants. Wrestlers gain invaluable experience competing against peers from diverse backgrounds, enhancing their skills and broadening their perspectives.

The 2025 U.S. Marine Corps Junior and 16U National Championships in Fargo stand as a testament to the dedication and talent of young wrestlers nationwide. As the tournament unfolds, it promises to deliver high-caliber matches and memorable moments, solidifying its status as a cornerstone event in the youth wrestling calendar.
