Diet Rich in Whole Plant Foods and Fish May Lower Colon Cancer Risk in Men

A comprehensive study has found that men who consume a diet rich in whole plant-based foods and fish have a significantly lower risk of developing colorectal cancer. Researchers attribute this benefit to the high levels of fiber, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids present in these foods, which promote gut health and reduce inflammation—key factors in cancer prevention.

The study followed over 50,000 men for more than 20 years, analyzing their dietary patterns and health outcomes. Men who regularly ate fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fish had a 25% lower risk of colorectal cancer compared to those who consumed diets high in red and processed meats. The protective effects were even more pronounced among those who also limited their intake of sugary and ultra-processed foods.

Health professionals are encouraging men to adopt this dietary approach, often referred to as the “Mediterranean diet,” to promote digestive health and overall well-being. This pattern of eating not only lowers cancer risk but also supports cardiovascular health, weight management, and mental clarity. Including fermented foods like yogurt and kimchi can further enhance gut microbiota, strengthening the body’s natural defenses.

The findings come at a critical time as colorectal cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the United States. By making simple yet impactful dietary changes, men can significantly reduce their risk and take control of their long-term health.
