Firefighter Steve Moore Tackles 2025 London Marathon in Full Gear

Meet Steve Moore, a determined 54-year-old firefighter from Buckinghamshire, who has once again pushed the boundaries of endurance with an ambitious new challenge: to run the 2025 London Marathon fully clad in firefighting equipment to raise funds for the Firefighters’ Charity.

A Passion for Running

Steve’s journey as a runner commenced in his mid-20s, rooted in a desire to maintain fitness after engaging in various sports during his younger days. His involvement deepened when he joined a running club and participated in races, including the Tough Guy events, where he notably finished in the top 50 one year. This achievement almost led him to compete on the show SAS: Are You Tough Enough?, a prospect he later regretted not pursuing.

The 103 Fire Stations Challenge

Before setting his sights on the London Marathon, Steve undertook an impressive journey running to all 103 fire stations within the London Fire Brigade. Inspired by a map he saw while stationed at Edmonton, he meticulously planned a route, ultimately covering over 300 miles in a remarkable five days and six hours. Initially aiming for a five-day finish with 60 miles per day, navigational challenges delayed his final leg, yet he prioritized a daylight finish surrounded by family and colleagues.

Preparing for the Marathon

As he gears up for the marathon, Steve’s training regimen has drastically evolved. Following his last marathon in 2023—where he competed without specific preparatory training—his recent encounter with a firefighter using breathing apparatus during the event ignited his desire to take on a similar challenge. His current training emphasizes efficiency, incorporating speed sessions alongside his usual endurance workouts.

Challenges of Full Firefighter Gear

Running encumbered by firefighting gear presents unique difficulties, notably in breathing. While accustomed to carrying weight, the gear limits airflow through the face mask, leading to elevated heart rates and increased pressure on his legs. For this marathon, Steve anticipates changing oxygen tanks upwards of a dozen times, all while striving for a target completion time of 4 hours and 42 minutes.

Training Adjustments and Diet

Incorporating training around his shift work as a firefighter, Steve adapts his long runs before night shifts and practices on a treadmill in full gear post-shift. His training week comprises:

  • Long runs (trail and road) before night shifts
  • Treadmill acclimatization runs after night shifts
  • Interval speed sessions
  • Strength training focusing on heavy weights
  • Static bike sessions for low-impact recovery
  • Treadmill runs in full gear with breathing apparatus

The longest run completed so far is 18 miles, with aspirations to increase to 22 miles two weeks prior to the marathon.

Nutrition and Training Diet

Steve’s training diet synergizes with his demanding work schedule. On day shifts, he typically engages in a quick recovery run, supported by bananas for energy. During longer runs, he opts for hot cross buns, sometimes paired with peanut butter and jam. Meals at the fire station are substantial, with options like eggs and katsu curry, while snacks during shifts are light and easily digestible. His post-training recovery often includes a protein shake.

Public Reactions and Support

While most of his training occurs at the fire station treadmill, he has noticed that training in full firefighting gear draws attention when conducted in public. On the marathon day, Steve will be backed by a support team, ensuring he has supplies and equipment changes planned along the route.
